With the wide selection of wood species, don’t settle for common, production narrow strip-width oak flooring. Imagine your rooms finished in your favorite wood in long, wide distinctive plank floors once found only in historic period homes. The wider plank flooring, in longer lengths portend quality that stands out as a cut above the rest. There is no crisper, cleaner, longer wearing, more attractive floor available.

Common strip-width flooring generally measures 1-1/2 or 2-1/4” wide; the 1-1/2” as is often found in late Victorian and turn of the century homes. Plank-width flooring describes flooring measuring 3” wide, running commonly up to 8”. Depending on wood species, some woods are available even up to 12-14” wide. Be aware that the wider the boards, the more care should be taken to ensure proper environmental conditions to minimize cupping and separation between boards. Seek an experienced plank-flooring specialist to be sure your plank floors are installed properly.

One way to light an area in a pleasing fashion is to employ the Layers of Lighting technique. This method requires a designer to consider the four layers of light (ambient, task, focal, and decorative) when they are constructing a lighting plan for a given space.

By taking all of these layers into account, an interior designer can cultivate whatever mood they want in a certain space.

Explore the nuances of lighting with layers, and learn how to utilize different types of lighting technology to create the ideal ambiance for any given space and any given function.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) today announced its Networked Energy Services (NES) smart grid system has won the European Smart Metering Innovation of the Year Award 2012. Presented to Echelon at the Smart Metering UK and Europe Summit in London on January 26, the award recognizes achievements and innovation from smart metering solution providers.

The judges, comprised of utilities and industry experts from a range of companies around Europe, selected Echelon because the company's system has redefined the role of a smart meter to be a collector of valuable statistics essential for maintaining the operational health of the low voltage distribution network, in addition to its traditional role as an automated billing device. With these capabilities, utilities can further reduce operational costs, improve customer satisfaction and prepare for new applications such as renewable energy integration.

"We are honored to receive the Innovation of the Year Award," said Varun Nagaraj, senior vice president of Product Marketing and Management at Echelon. "We were among the earliest companies to recognize that our proven, open standard and multi-application platform could serve as the foundation for a diverse range of applications across the smart grid, such as meter reading, low voltage grid optimization, street lighting, and grid-aware buildings. We thank the judges for recognizing that Echelon is at the forefront of innovation in the smart grid."

Echelon's Smart Grid Solution allows utilities to accurately collect billing data and vital health statistics from the low voltage grid with over 99% field proven reliability. Built on Echelon's proven (deployed in 35 million smart meters), open standard (based on Open Smart Grid Protocol – OSGP) and unique multi-application platform (powered by its Control Operating System – COS), the Echelon Smart Grid Solution is a risk-free choice for utilities looking to modernize their grid.

In Echelon's Smart Grid Solution, each OSGP meter or grid device uses power line (or optional RF) signaling to communicate with its peers in a meshed network. The smart meter and device network share a single IP connection to a utility's WAN backhaul, either through a NES Data Concentrator, Edge Control Node (ECN) or an IP-enabled meter. Each meter or device provides a comprehensive set of energy services when operating within the smart metering system. Some of these services are: automated two-way meter reading, power quality measurements, remote electronic disconnect and local physical reconnect, outage detection and restoration management, blackout and brownout detection, real-time direct load control, and more.

Effective and appropriate wayfinding solutions don't happen by accident but instead require careful planning and forethought. In order to derive the greatest financial benefits, an organization must integrate wayfinding at the beginning of its facility's design and construction process rather than at the end. Fortunately, modern wayfinding solutions - from flexible modular signs to interactive digital displays - excel in meeting just about every need an organization my have, whether it's enhancing a visitor's experience throughout a facility or reinforcing the organizational brand, or both.

Discover how the use of aluminum in CSP support systems is revolutionizing the solar power industry; making solar power a more efficient and affordable energy source.

Solar power is rapidly emerging as a popular source of sustainable energy. There have been major advances in the solar power industry that, when coupled with increasing fossil fuel costs and concern about climate change, combine to make a powerful argument for the use of solar power as a viable energy source.

One of the biggest technological advances is the recent use of aluminum as an alternative to steel in concentrated solar power (CSP) support systems. The benefits of aluminum range from higher optical efficiency to reduced ecosystem disruption.
